Other Important Topics
FEE-HELP
- FEE-HELP – a student loan provided by the government to Australian citizens (and some others) so that you do not have to pay any fees up front. The loan is interest free (apart from inflation) and is paid back in instalments once your salary reaches a determined point. Students can make voluntary repayments at any time. There is a 25% loan fee for those studying an undergraduate degree.
- How do I access FEE-HELP? – indicate to AC that you wish to use FEE-HELP, either in your application form or by contacting the admissions team directly at admissions@ac.edu.au. You will then receive an Electronic Commonwealth Assistance Form (eCAF) which you need to complete. A valid Tax File Number is required to complete the eCAF. The government will contact you directly and you will need to confirm your details. When it comes time to enrol you need to select FEE-HELP for each subject.
- Commonwealth Assistance Notice (CAN) – students using FEE-HELP should receive a CAN email within 10 working days of the census date. The CAN includes important information about your enrolment, any HELP debt you have incurred or student contribution amounts you have paid, and any loan fee you may have incurred.

Cross Credits
- Cross credit: the student requests that subjects studied at another institution be credited towards their award. This requires an official transcript and only applies to subjects studied within the past ten years.
- Students thinking of applying for cross credits are encouraged to do this as soon as they receive an offer, to allow time for the application for cross credits to be processed.
- The application is considered by the admissions team and the Program Director. They must take into consideration the level of study, whether the subjects match Alphacrucis units and if granting a credit would in fact disadvantage the student in the long term (for example, the student does not gain the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed). Students have 14 days to appeal a cross credit decision, upon first receiving notification.
Application for Cross Credit form

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
- Recognition of Prior Learning: Recognition of prior learning is an assessment process that involves assessment of an individual’s relevant prior learning (including formal, informal and non-formal learning) to determine the credit outcomes of an individual application for credit.
- Please complete the form and email to admissions@ac.edu.au
- Please note that in completing the application for RPL you select one specific unit and must be able to demonstrate that you have met the learning outcomes for the subject.
- To find the learning outcomes for a unit you can type the subject code (e.g. BIB312) into the search bar of the website www.ac.edu.au and they should be listed under ‘Outcomes’. Alternatively, you can request the subject outline from studentsupport@ac.edu.au
- As assessing RPL is a detailed process, please be aware that there may be a significant wait time

Grades
Higher Education Grading System
It is important to understand that this grading system can be quite different from the way you were graded in school, or in your home country if you are an International Student.
It is very difficult to achieve a grade of more than 85%. The following descriptions of each grading level should help you understand this system better:
- High Distinction: This grade denotes performance which meets all subject objectives in such an exceptional way and with such marked excellence that it deserves the highest level of recognition
- Distinction: This grade denotes performance which clearly deserves a very high level of recognition as an excellent achievement in the subject
- Credit: This grade denotes performance which is substantially better than would normally be expected of competent students in the subject
- Pass: This grade denotes performance which satisfies subject objectives
- Fail: This grade denotes performance which does not meet subject objectives
What happens if I fail?
Failing an assessment does not usually mean that you have failed the whole subject. However, it does mean you will need to work particularly hard to ensure you do well in your remaining assessments. Make sure you read all the feedback you get on your assessments so that you can improve on the next one.
If you do fail the subject (receive a total grade less than 50%), then this subject will not help you progress towards completing your award (course). Failing is definitely not the end of the world, and you can retake this subject at a later date.
However, it is essential that you continue to progress towards completing your award. If you fail 50% of your units for one semester, or if you fail a core unit, you will receive a letter with an academic management plan, we call this an intervention letter. This plan is to help get you progressing in your award again.
If you receive an intervention letter two semesters in a row, you may be asked to show why you should be allowed to continue in this award, as it may be better to take up studies in a less academically rigorous award.
Graduation
How to Graduate
Am I eligible?
Use the enrolment guide for your award and up to date summary of studies to check you are eligible to graduate (have passed all the relevant subjects, and met all the requirements in terms of minimum/maximum level units). If you are unsure, contact Student Support.
- If you believe you are eligible to graduate, or you have been a sent an email stating you are eligible to graduate – complete the Application to Graduate Form.
- Conferral – all HE awards must be officially conferred by the council. The conferral dates are in November and April. HE award transcripts and testamurs can only be provided at these times. VET certificates are available throughout the year.
- Absentia or ceremony? – if you select in absentia it means you will not attend the ceremony but request the transcripts to be posted to you. You can graduate in absentia in November or April. If you wish to attend the ceremony, you will receive the official documents on the graduation day in April. You will also need to hire the gown, hood and stole (from Alphacrucis) to wear for the occasion.
- You must submit your Application to Graduate Form before the closing date, which is approximately 6 weeks before the conferral date (this cut off date will be stated on the form). Graduation will also require payment of a graduation fee to cover the cost of Testamur. There are additional fees for attending the graduation ceremony or having their Testamur mailed out.
Transcript Request
If you need to supply an academic institution, government institution or an employer with a copy of your transcript before the conferral date, you can request that we supply the transcript to the institution directly using the Transcript Request Form. We cannot supply the transcript directly to a student before the official conferral date.
